The word "Ass" Used in the bible...

I was reading a passage in the bible earlier today, and to my surprise, came across the word "Ass", known to be a vulger word here in our society. In the biblical context, the word is refering to a Donkey. My question then is, why is the word viewed as a "bad" word in our society? and why when i went to a christian school, if i had said the word, it was wrong? (obviously not calling someone, but using it as it is used here in the bible.)

It's all based off of context, as far as the Christian school goes. But as far as it being a vulgar word, it's a cultural thing. It's like over here the words bum and piss aren't that big of a deal, but they're like the "f-bomb" over in, let's say Scotland.

yeah, i guess it all depends where you are and how society has viewed the rule. You're right cpownab7, it is all about context, cause like now in our society, if you drop that word on someone, they will automatically think of it as a vulger word, and not what it actually means.

being called anything but what you are can be offensive....Would you like to be called a donkey?....it would be the same as being called an ass....or the word Fag.....people call gays that word but did you know that Fag actually is a european word for cigarette?....so why would they be called Fags?....if you use the word to insult someone that is when it is wrong...when you use the words to deface....slander...then it is wrong.....Rule of thumb, before you choose the words you use ask yourself...will this Glorify my Father in Heaven....Use your Holy Spirit to speak for you.

I don't see that an insult if a bible would say an " ass " It would be an insult if a person/bible refers to other people.

I'm on the semi-same page as Jaz is on. If the Bible says it, it's always referring to a donkey. Always. But it becomes offensive and vulgar when a person (not in the Bible) uses it with the intent to curse, to call someone it, or to refer to a part of the body that needn't be referred to - in all 3, it's the intent of their heart - they don't have good intentions when saying it out of the context of the Bible, just evil intent...... IMO.

So just don't think of the word " Ass " In the bible insults alot.
